¹⁰² BRHADDEŠĪ [अनु॰ १८३] [ अस्यार्थः- ]चतुःश्रुते पञ्चमस्य यदा श्रुतिद्वयं गृह्णाति निषादः तदासौ श्रुतिभिन्नोऽभिधीयते। ननु मध्यमग्रामे पञ्चमस्य त्रिश्रुतिकत्वात् कथं श्रुतिद्वयं गृह्णाति निपादः? उच्यते । (fa) भूतपूर्वन्यायेन चतु श्रुतिरुच्यते । यथा भित्रकैशिकरागे त्रिश्रुतिपञ्चमस्य च[तु] श्रुतित्वमाश्रित्य लोपः कृतः पड्जग्रामे, एवमत्रापि भविष्यतीति न दोषः । लक्षणं चास्य तद्यथा - [५. भिन्नतानः] ^६रतानस्तु मध्यमन्यासः पञ्चमांशोऽल्पसप्तमः । मध्यमापञ्चमीज?ात्योर्ऋषभेण तु दुर्बलः ॥ ३१३॥ [अनु॰ १८४] अस्यार्थः - भिन्नतानो मध्यमग्रामसम्बन्धः मध्यमापञ्चमीज?ात्युत्पन्नत्वात् । पञ्चमो भित्रनासिका(?) ग्रहोंऽशश्च। मध्यमो न्यासः। मध्यमनिषादयोरल्पत्वम् [?]^६२। निषादोऽत्र काकली। पूर्णश्चायम प्रौढकरुणेऽस्य प्रयोगः। पञ्चमादिमूर्छना।सञ्चारी वर्णः।प्रसन्नादिरलङ्कार;।दक्षिणे कला, वार्तिके कला, चित्रे कला । स्वरपदगीते चच्चत्पुटादितालः। [भिन्नरागाणा ग्रामविभागः] [अनु॰ १८५] भित्राना ग्रामविभागस्तु काश्यपेनोक्तः। तथा च - ‘‘भित्रषड्जस्तु षड्ज? स्याद् भिन्नकैशिकमध्यमः। पञ्चमः कैशिकस्तानो मध्यमग्रामसंश्रितः ॥'' ल्स्ताने इति भित्राः समाख्याता गौडकाञ् शृणु साम्प्रतम् ॥ ३१४॥

¹³⁷ TRANSLATION Sauvīrī should be known as the first one, vega-madhyamā the second, sādhāritā is the third one and gāndhārī the fourth. Thus should be known the four bhāṣās born of sauvīraka. (30c-31) Suddhabhinnā, vārāṭī, similarly dhaivatabhūṣitā and then viśālā are said to be born of bhinnapañcama. (32) The bhāṣā called māṅgalī is born of boṭṭa-rāga. In mālavapañcama is born bhāvinī, the one that is beautiful for the people. (33) Mālavā (and) bhinnavālikā should be known to be born of ṭakkakaiśika, and drāvidī is the third bhāṣā there that is described with characteristics (lakṣaṇas). (34) The two known as bāhyaṣāḍavā and nādākhyā are born in vesaraṣāḍava. Tānodbhavā should be known as being assigned to bhinnatāna. (35) In gāndhārapañcama, gāndhārikā is the one bhāṣā that is accepted. Gāndhārī is with profuse gāndhāra and is delightful to the people in pañcama (gāndhārapañcama). In revagupta¹³ (?) śakākhyā is the one spoken of in pañcamaṣāḍava. (36) Thus are obvious the bhāṣās that are born in manifold ways. Now listen to their description alongwith illustration for each one. (37) [The description of bhāṣās] [1. Bhāṣās in ṭakka-rāga] It has madhyama as its aṁśa, şadja as its concluding note, is devoid of pañcama and there is to be seen here again and again the mutual movement¹⁴ of dhaivata-niṣāda and similarly ṣaḍja - dhaivata. This should be known as hexatonic. Travaņā should bear the name mūlā. (38-39)
