301 VIMARŚA 52. The word 'yatah' in this verse seems to imply that because the svaras have to match the angahāras performed in the order of āsārita, the formation or variation of amsas should be done in the text of the vardhamāna. Āsārita and vardhamāna have identical temporal dimensions with slight variation in splitting (shown below). These are the two gītakas alongwith which the performance of dance is prescribed in NS XXXI - 16 + 17 + 32 = 65 \text{ Kalās} Asārita 9 + 8 + 16 + 32 = 65 \text{ Kalās} Vardhamāna 53. 'Not exceptional' means those svaras, the operation of which in the formation of pentatonic varieties is not hindered by the rule of samvāda. 54. The strict prohibition of the omission of madhyama seems to be based on the fact that this svara is the link between gandharva and sāman, it being the tonic in sāman and the connecting point between the two triads of the heptad. 55,56.The words utsarga and apavada are borrowed from Pūrvamimāmsā. The former stands for the general rule and the latter for the exception to the same. 57. The import is not clear from here to the end of the Anu. 58. 'Sangati' stands for to and fro movement between two svaras in a jāti. NŚ uses 'paraspara-sañcāra' (mutual to and fro movement) and 'paras- paragamana '(mutual movement i.e. each of the two given svaras reaching out to the other) for this melodic phenomenon (cf.NŚ XXVIII. 96, 107). The word sangati is used even to-day in the oral tradition in the same meaning. It is notable that this relationship between any two svaras is purely melodic phenomenon; it does not depend on the acoustic relationship of samvāda. It is interesting to note that the word samvada has been used in our text in the place of sangati several times in the section on ragas. 59. Omission, in ancient thought, is not something absolute, rather it is the extreme state of sparseness. The svara that is omissible in a jāti is sparse in its complete state. 60. NŚ does not mention the mūrchanās of jātis. Matanga does this the first time. This innovation seems to be necessitated by the for introduction of fretted viņās (see Glossary). 61. Pañcapāṇi is another name of the tāla called ṣaṭpitāputraka, the third name being uttara.

P.t. adds here the following line which is out of place and has, therefore, been dropped by us - अतःपरं प्रवक्ष्यामि लक्षणं च समासतः। 45. Reconstruction based on S.Rāj II.2.1.120 where potā is enumer- ated as a vibhāṣā of ṭakka (rāga) and ibid 826, reading as - पञ्चमांशग्रहा पड्जन्यासा याष्टिकसम्मता । मध्यमग्रामगा पूर्णा पोता नाम विभाषिका ॥ 46. The notation after this point has been read in p. t. as the initial part of the illustration of paurālī that follows. 47. 15 TRANSLATION "Some who are adept in the knowledge of śrutis, speak of twenty-two śrutis; some (speak of them) as being differentiated into sixty-six. Others propound their infinity itself." (Anu. 7) But then, what is the measure of śruti? It is being explained. Pañcama is known as being seated in the two grāmas.19 The difference of that (pañcama) through utkarşa 20 (augmentation) and apakarşa 21 (diminution) through mārdava 22 (lit. softness) and āyatatva 23 (lit. the state of being stretched or extended) is the measure of śruti (lit. śruti is of that measure). (Anu. 8) Now the nidarsana 24 (demonstration) of the twenty-two-fold nature of srutis is thus (being given). Having made two viņās equal in measure,25 string,26 upavādana 27 (the place where the strings are tied up at the lower end of the viņā), daņļa28 (rod or board) and mūrchanā29 (tuning), they (two viņās) should be established in şadjagrāma.50 On one of these, having made the śruti madhyamagrāmiki31 (belonging to madhyama-grāma) on account of the apakarşa (lowering) of pañcama, (one) should make the same śruti şadjagrāmikī 32 (belonging to sadjagrāma) on account of pañcama.35 Thus (the vinā) becomes lowered by (one) śruti, but there is no special gain,34 because of there being only the perception of high and low. Again one should lower in the same manner35 so that gāndhāra and niṣāda that are the subjects (kartṛ in dual no.) on one viņā will 'enter' the rabha-dhaivata 36 that have attained objectification (karmatā) on the unchanged (sthirā) viņā on account of their (of gāndhāra- niṣāda) being 'more's7 (higher) by two śrutis (each, in relation to ṛṣabha- dhaivata). Again also, the dhaivata-ṛṣabha on the cala (mobile) viṇā that is lowered in the same manner, will enter the pañcama-şadja on the other (viņā), on account of their being 'more's8 (higher) (than the latter) by three śrutis (each). Again also, on the (cala) viņā that is lowered in the same way, pañcama, madhyama and şadja enter madhyama, gandhara and nişada respectively on the other on account of their being 'more'39 (higher) (than the latter) by four śrulis.
