277 PĂTHAVIMARŚA पांशग्रहान्ता सम्पूर्णा भाषा मालवपञ्चमे । वनेषु कामिनीसङ्गे नियोज?्या ऋषिकैनरैः॥ विभावनीति तामेवाचष्ट याष्टिकसत्तमः॥ 122. The name of this bhāṣā is read as mālavā at the end of the illustration and so it is in S Rāj II.2.1.905. 123,124. cf. सञ्चारः सधयोर्यस्या रिधयोधैव दृश्यते । Kalā (appendix) on SR II, p. 137. 125. In spite of this adjective indicating the completeness of this bhāṣā, the illustration omits ṣaḍja. 126. SR II. 1. 30 cd reads this name as bhinnavalitā and so does S Rāj II.2.1.131 c; ibid 88a reads bhinnalalitā and ibid 907c reads bhinnavallikā. Our text seems to change bhinnavalikā to bhinnavālikā in verse 34 c in order to meet the demand of metre, the sixth syllable being required to be long. At this point of our text the change to bhinnalālikā or bhinnalālitā seems to involve an error of deciphering or copying. 127. The ed. has noted that some of the prabandhas listed in the initial enumeration (uddeśa) are not described later and others not listed here are described, whereas there is sometimes a difference between a name that is listed and the one that is described. This remark is true; the discrepancies will be pointed out by us in the textual notes at respective places. (Also see Vol. III). 2. Read as 'padvalī' in Mānaso IV.6.316, 'pardhala' in ibid 117 and 'paddhalī'in SR IV.295. 3. The ed. has noted a break in the text here. Kalā has three main meanings: time-unit equal to a guru or two mātrās of tāla, the action in tāla, and unsounded action.

"Kalā has many meanings; the main ones are-firstly, the time-unit that is equal to a guru i.e. two mātrās of tāla, secondly, the 'action' (kriyā) in tāla, sounded or unsounded and thirdly, the unsounded action."

٠ VIMARŚA 305 central part of present Madhya Pradesh. The special preference for Mālavā requires further investigation. 29. The word gamaka is used here in the sense of vocal embellishments including shakes; it is not restricted to shake. 30. See note 22. 31. Each grāmarāga is said to be born of one or more jātis. 32. Pūrvaranga has been described in NS IV and V; it embodies instrumental rendering, song, dance, dialogue etc. presented as a preliminary to drama. It has both ritualistic and psychological value as it ensures the success of drama by propitiating the gods and prepares the audience for being receptive to drama. 33. Kākalī and antara are always prescribed to be sparse, but here only the sparseness of gandhara is prescribed, although both antara and kakali are present. It could be construed that gandhara stands for the original gāndhāra and not antara. See note 91. • 34,35. The prescription of a specific varņa and alaṅkāra in a rāga is not easy to comprehend. It could only be surmised that the peculiar form of a raga in some cases becomes manifest in ascent, in other cases in descent and similarly a specific alaṅkāra could be assigned to a rāga on account of having a special role in establishing the same. 36. Mārga literally means path; it stands for the span of a tāla. NŠ describes three mārgas of each tāla, citra being the shortest, vārtika or vṛtti being its double and dakṣiṇa again being its double. Our text describes two additional mārgas viz. dhruva being half of the length of citra and śūnya being half of dhruva. (See Vol.I. Anu.113) 37. Kalā has many meanings; the main ones are-firstly, the time-unit that is equal to a guru i.e. two mātrās of tāla, secondly, the 'action' (kriyā) in tāla, sounded or unsounded and thirdly, the unsounded action. Here the first meaning is relevant because the length of kalā depends on the mārga in use at a given time. 38. Caccatpuța is the first among the five tālas described in NŠ XXXI. This is the only caturasra (lit. square) tala, being composed of four kalas or eight mātrās. 39. Garbha-sandhi is the third among the five sandhis or junctures in drama described in NŚ XIX; the first two being mukha and pratimukha and the last two being vimarsa and nirvahana. Garbha literally means 'womb', the inside or interior of something. In drama garbha-sandhi stands for that juncture where the 'sprouting' of the 'seed' has taken place, but the fruit is still enshrouded in the 'garbha'. 40. Our text does not uphold the relationship of any raga to both the grāmas; the decision always rests with the interval of pañcama, if it is composed of four śrutis, then relationship with ṣadjagrāma is confirmed and

MS B reading recorded by the ed. - 'vanita'. 12. cf. S R V, 12-14. 13. S R V, 15cd, 16ab prescribes the first two mātrās in the citramārga, the first two and the last two i.e. seventh and eighth ( not the third and fourth as in our text) in vārtika mārga and of course all the eight in dakṣiṇa mārga. 14. The text is utterly confused and mutilated at this point as - दक्षिणा चोर्ध्वगा चित्रे द्वे तु ध्वकासर्पिणी। कृष्ट्या पश्चिनी +++++++++ ॥ अधवा प्रथमे मध्यमागुलीयो ( ? ) द्वितीये सार्धनि ++ । तृतीये मुष्टिमोक्षण्च ( च ) तुर्थे करपातना ॥ धूवका सर्पिणी चित्रे दक्षिणा वितीचित गीता ( ? )॥ उभयवाद्यप्रवर्तनवशात् प्रतीतिश्चागीतप्रधानदक्षिणा वृत्ति उभयप्रधाना वृत्ति मवित्ति ( ? ) बाराप्रधाना चित्रवृत्ति । The above verses have been dropped by us because (i) they almost repeat the content of verses 180-82 and (ii) whatever seems to be new in them is not found in any other text to form the basis of reconstruction. The prose portion has been reconstructed on the basis of NS XXIX, 71 and Abhi Bhā. 15. This line has been reconstructed on the basis of NS XXIX, variant recension, p. 133, 34. 16. cf. चित्रे समा यति । दूतो लयः । उपरिपाणि मागधी । ओघोऽवयवः अनागतग्रहः । अभिसृतवाद्यप्रयोगः । .(Bha Ko, p. 481) 17. P.t. repeats 'samānā'. 18. P.t. has been reconstructed as 'abhīkṣṇam', meaning 'at once' as it is nearest to the available reading and also fits the context as an alternative (synonym) of 'samam' i.e. together. 19. The reading of P.t. 'vādyaprayoga' has been replaced with 'vādyagrahayoga', because this reading recurs in the following sentence and is more appropriate because of the incorporation of 'graha'. 20. S R V, 15cd, 16ab prescribes the first two mātrās in the citramārga, the first two and the last two i.e. seventh and eighth ( not the third and fourth as in our text) in vārtika mārga and of course all the eight in dakṣiṇa mārga. 14. The text is utterly confused and mutilated at this point as - दक्षिणा चोर्ध्वगा चित्रे द्वे तु ध्वकासर्पिणी। कृष्ट्या पश्चिनी +++++++++ ॥ अधवा प्रथमे मध्यमागुलीयो ( ? ) द्वितीये सार्धनि ++ । तृतीये मुष्टिमोक्षण्च ( च ) तुर्थे करपातना ॥ धूवका सर्पिणी चित्रे दक्षिणा वितीचित गीता ( ? )॥ उभयवाद्यप्रवर्तनवशात् प्रतीतिश्चागीतप्रधानदक्षिणा वृत्ति उभयप्रधाना वृत्ति मवित्ति ( ? ) बाराप्रधाना चित्रवृत्ति । The above verses have been dropped by us because (i) they almost repeat the content of verses 180-82 and (ii) whatever seems to be new in them is not found in any other text to form the basis of reconstruction. The prose portion has been reconstructed on the basis of NS XXIX, 71 and Abhi Bhā. 15. This line has been reconstructed on the basis of NS XXIX, variant recension, p. 133, 34. 16. cf. चित्रे समा यति । दूतो लयः । उपरिपाणि मागधी । ओघोऽवयवः अनागतग्रहः । अभिसृतवाद्यप्रयोगः । .(Bha Ko, p. 481) 17. P.t. repeats 'samānā'. 18. P.t. has been reconstructed as 'abhīkṣṇam', meaning 'at once' as it is nearest to the available reading and also fits the context as an alternative (synonym) of 'samam' i.e. together. 19. The reading of P.t. 'vādyaprayoga' has been replaced with 'vādyagrahayoga', because this reading recurs in the following sentence and is more appropriate because of the incorporation of 'graha'. 20.
